The Strength of the Pack

Nearly two months ago, Detective Emerson Thayer shot and killed 12-year-old Mateo Sanchez in the line of duty. She's since been cleared of wrongdoing by her law enforcement peers, but in the court of public opinion, Em's competence and motives are questioned.

Just two days off desk duty, Em uncovers the bodies of an unidentified Hispanic couple, shot in the head and buried under dozens of coyote carcasses near the Mexican border. Then she finds a young girl--their daughter?--left for dead in the desert. Racing over the sand under a tangerine moon, Em promises the girl she'll be safe. But two days later, Janie Doe is kidnapped from the hospital.

Desperate to find her, to atone for her mistakes and prove her worth as a cop, Em doubles down on her investigation, recruiting an eager young deputy, an ambitious reporter and a grizzled city cop to her posse. But when an IED--hidden inside a dead coyote--is detonated outside her apartment, Em narrowly escapes with her life. The Sheriff, fearing a backlash for the Sanchez shooting, pulls Em off active cases.

Unwilling to give up, Em keeps her investigation alive. But can she keep herself and her friends alive as she hunts for a missing little girl and a ruthless killer?
